Mechanical risque General cigar trade card

$100.00

It is approx. 7-5/8 inches high X 4-5/8 inches wide (19.4 cm. X 11.8 cm.) when opened up. It is in very good condition (considering how many times this card was probably opened in it’s day!); the folds are strong, the edges are fine, it has an insignificant fold at the girls ankle, and it does have the handwritten note “Jimmy sends this to Jan” (is this sent as a joke or a hint?!). The outside of the card is fine with no glue marks or tears.

Description

This is a great trade card for the General Arthur Cigar maker Kerbs, Wertheim & Schiffer of New York that proves Victorians were not as ‘proper’ as their cultivated reputation deserves! It shows on the inside when unfolded a very risque image of a woman dressed in the ‘evening girl’ style of clothes for that era with her legs ‘spread’ (as the card suggested!), and a black pussy cat in front of her–which also gives us an approximate date for the ‘dirty’ connotation for this word!
